"Prolotherapy", or Proliferation Therapy, is a non-surgical technique used to promote the reconstruction of tendons and ligaments involved in joint stability. It was developed in the 1970s to help treat stretched or torn ligaments that lead to joint instability and subsequent pain in humans.

A local injection is used to cause mild inflammation in and around compromised tendons and ligaments in order to stimulate the body's natural healing process. The body responds by producing new collagen resulting in stronger tendons and ligaments that can better stabilize the joint. Once joint stabilization is achieved, joint pain often resolves.
